Letter positions are counted in Hebrew reading order using the traditional Masoretic consonantal text. Vowel points, cantillation marks, spaces, and punctuation are excluded. Final mem (ם) has the same traditional numerical value, 40, as standard mem (מ).

Why this pattern matters

Genesis 1:1 contains 28 Hebrew letters, allowing the verse to be divided into two equal halves of 14 letters each. Pattern 13 examines the two boundary letters of the first 14-letter half: letter 1 and letter 14 in Hebrew reading order.

How this pattern is measured

Identify letters 1 and 14 in Hebrew reading order, assign their traditional Hebrew numerical values, and add those values together. The pattern is satisfied if the combined total is evenly divisible by 7.
