Convert each Hebrew letter to its position in the 22-letter Hebrew alphabet, and then add the letter positions within each word. The seven resulting word totals are 76, 23, 41, 23, 62, 29, and 44.
Seven word totals have 27 − 1 = 127 possible nonempty subsets. Add the values in every subset and test whether the total is evenly divisible by 23. Exactly 11 subsets pass this test.
Each number identifies a word position in Genesis 1:1. These are all 11 qualifying subsets; none of the other 116 nonempty subsets has a total divisible by 23.
Words 2 and 4 each have an alphabet-position total of exactly 23. Consequently, adding either or both of these words to certain qualifying combinations produces additional multiples of 23. The 11 subsets are therefore mathematically related rather than independent results.
